Exploring Careers and Discovering All That Agriculture Has to Offer
Learn about Erick’s experience working as a TerraTech intern this past summer.
After a planned study-abroad program was canceled, Erick began looking for a way to stay engaged over the summer. What started as a last-minute decision became a meaningful introduction to a different side of agriculture through TerraTech and his internship with Eco2Mix.
Erick first learned about TerraTech through campus posters, the agriculture department, and emails shared by a counselor at Fresno State. After applying, he was enrolled in a week-long virtual career development program focused on professional skills, workplace expectations, and interview preparation. At the end of the program, participants completed an assessment that helped match them with host companies—leading Erick to interview with, and ultimately join, Eco2Mix.
During his internship, Erick worked primarily on gathering and analyzing data related to product performance. He created visual graphs and reports that helped translate technical findings into clear insights. Through this work, he began to see that agriculture is not only about fieldwork, but also about data, analysis, and decision-making that happens behind the scenes. His experience included a mix of office-based work, field sampling, and exposure to how agricultural companies operate day to day.
One of the most impactful moments of the internship was attending the American Pistachio Growers Insights Day alongside growers and industry professionals. The event introduced Erick to the networking and professional side of agriculture—an aspect of the industry he had not experienced through coursework alone.
Reflecting on the experience, Erick encourages future applicants to shift their mindset from focusing only on formal education to valuing real-world learning. While school provides an important foundation, he found that hands-on experience is what truly helps clarify career interests and build confidence.
For Erick, the internship offered a clearer picture of what modern agriculture looks like—and how many opportunities exist beyond the field.
